Sulfonic acid is an hypothetical acid with formula HS (= O) 2-OH. This composition is a less stable tautomer of sulfurous acid HO-S (= O)-OH, sulfonic acid so quickly this becomes when it is formed. Compounds derived by replacing the hydrogen bound to sulfur with organic compounds are stable. These can then form salts or esters called sulfonates.
