have you ever wondered how those fascinating little tubes of cardboard at the centre of every roll were made?
we start by purchasing cardboard strips wound on a long reel and in various widths (normally between 79mm and 110mm wide) and we put three of these together to wrap around a mandrel bar. The three layers of cardboard are coated with a quick drying paper glue which bonds the layers together.
cardboard cores
we can make both solid cores which are often used in toilet rolls and industrial rolls, or strippable cores which you often find in centrefeed rolls - cores which are designed to be pulled out of the centre before the roll is used. If we are making strippable cores then we ensure that one of the strips of cardboard, destined for the inside of the core, will get two black lines printed to aid identification of the tear point.
the cores are made to a length of 2650mm before a sharp rotating blade slices the long core off, then they are stacked ready to go into our production process.
