The amorphous form of an API offers some advantages over a crystalline material, the most significant one being increased solubility/bioavailability.
However, the amorphous state has the highest energy and without proper stabilization, can revert to another more thermodynamically favored crystalline state.
Amorphous materials also can exhibit different mechanical properties, chemical reactivity and water sorption profiles. In spite of these challenges, there are circumstances when the amorphous form is desirable for either performance or intellectual property reasons.
