"Don't wait until everything is just right. It will never be perfect. There will always be challenges, obstacles and less than perfect conditions. So what. Get started now. With each step you take, you will grow stronger and stronger, more and more skilled, more and more self-confident and more and more successful." ~ Mark Victor

There is no fixed formula for success in business, however, it is the dream of all small business entrepreneurs. At the same time it isn't impossible to succeed in business. Whether your business is about timber and wood supplies or business services, the following tips will help you move closer to your goal of business success.

1. Plan well before you leap – Planning will give direction to your efforts in reaching your objectives. It will also help you to know when you are going off track and need to correct your efforts. It is an invaluable tool in helping you succeed in business.

2. Bank upon the strengths of small businesses – Being a small business you have several advantages over larger businesses. Some of these include quick response time to changing market needs, flexibility and being able to offer customized services to clients. Consequently, as soon as you spot opportunities you need to capitalize on you strengths and grab them.

3. Serve a small target market – One of the limitations of a small business set up is access to limited resources compared with bigger companies. So as a small business you are better off serving a niche market rather than catering to a broader market segment. When you focus your efforts on a small segment you won't be competing directly with larger companies, and you'll be able to serve a your niche a lot better.

4. Set up systems – Set up processes for different functions of your venture. Creating processes makes business operations faster and makes the results more predictable. You may either choose to use a software or use a manual system to set it up.

5. Make a good impression on prospects – Be it any business the first impression makes all the difference. It is perhaps more important for small businesses because your business may not be a known brand already. Everything from your store's lay out, staff courtesy, professionalism, etc. can make or mar your image and affect your business success.

6. Have a unique selling proposition – Promote your business emphasizing the unique attributes of your product and service offerings. While you do need to keep a tab on your competitors' activities, don't imitate them. Try to innovate, and infuse value into your products and services.

7. Build a good name for your business – The long-term success of your business pretty much depends on the reputation you build up over the years. And this in turn is dependent on the quality of your products and services. So you not only need to deliver good quality products and services but also keep improving on them.

8. Remember that customer is king – Customers are the reason why your business exists. And the more customers you make the more you'll grow your small business. So to encourage your customers to keep coming back to you and refer your business to others, listen to them carefully when they complain and make suggestions, and use these to improve your services.

9. Learn to say "No" – As an entrepreneur you will be fielding a lot of requests asking for an investment of your time and resources. However, you cannot please everyone without forgoing some of your business interests. So you need to answer some of those requests with a "No." Realize, that as an entrepreneur your business needs are paramount.

10. Have an attitude of a winner – To succeed in business you need to have a “can do”, and a “never say die” attitude, coupled with an unlimited drive to achieve. Successful entrepreneurs are able to think ahead and plan accordingly, they try to adapt to the changing environment and know when to revise their plan when it's not working.
