7 Small Business IT Consultant Hiring Tips
As your business grows, it's technology needs will change too. And given the increasing complexity of business related information technology, assistance of a competent IT consultant becomes imminent. Whether you supply hospital equipments or deal in engineering parts, the following tips will help you hire a good IT consultant.
1. Assess the consultant for good listening skills – The very basis of consulting is to understand the needs of a client in depth, and then formulate or suggest the best solutions available. Make sure you're dealing with someone who really listens to your problems, and not someone who seems more interested in offering solutions even before she's completely listened to you or understood the problems well.
2. See if it's easy for you to understand your consultant – During your discussions with the consultant she should be able to explain things to you in lucid and clear language. In case you find a consultant is trying to flatter you with a lot of technical jargon, it should raise a red flag. In general, you should be able to discuss matters with ease, and the consultant should come out as someone you can rely upon.
3. Learn about a consultants association with product vendors – On one hand a relationship with a product vendor could mean that a consultant may have financial incentive tied to recommending a vendor's products. On the other, it might also mean that the consultant has ready access to technical support from a vendor, which might help in completing the projects faster and at low cost too. Consequently, you need to ensure that the consultant is objective in her advice, and at the same time your project's implementation is smooth and cost-effective.
4. Assess how you will track the project' progress – Ask the consultant about the progress reports she will be providing you with, so that you know the projects' progress and are also able to keep a tab on the costs. This will also enable you to seek clarification and discuss any issues with project implementation if you need to.
5. Ask for a time estimate for project completion – While it's difficult to know exactly how long a project will take to complete, your consultant based on her experience and calculations, should be able to give you a reasonably accurate idea about it. Also, ask the consultant to keep you informed in case of any delays at any stage during the project.
6. Check whether there is a backup for your consultant or not – You need to ask the consultant about who will work on and complete the project if the consultant has to abandon midway. In general, consultants have links with other consultants who can takeover a project if something like that happens.
7. Don't forget reference checks – Ask your consultant about some of her previous clients and assignments. Do contact these clients to find out whether they're happy with the consultant or not.
