The Superbe was a Téméraire class 74-gun ship of the line of the French Navy. She took part in the Croisière du Grand Hiver, where she sank due to a leak. She was constructed according to the plan of the most well known engineer of the maritime history: Jacques Noel Sane. "The Superbe" was put into the shipyard of Brest in 1782 and was launched in 1784. It is the exact model which represents the French battle ship of the end of the ancient regime, of the revolution and the Empire.

During the thirty years that followed the launching of these ships, many of them were captured by the British Marine. The skill of Sane was confirmed by the judgment passed by his compatriots and his adversaries on the vessels which he had built. By this way the historian of the British Marine said to one of them; "It was not only the biggest one, but it was also the most beautiful that we have seen up to here and inspite of its big side it could be manoeuvred as a frigate. The "Superbe" formed part of the Naval French War of the Admiral Villaret Joyeuse.
