The International Fragrance Association (IFRA) declares natural aromatic raw materials to be those as defined by ISO norm 9235 and substances that are isolated from them by purely physical means. In summary, natural aromatics are made by physically efxtracting the volatile fractions from plants without chemically altering them.
Natural aromatic extracts are simpler than natural fragrances. All of their components are physically extracted from a single genus and species of a plant. This means that natural aromatic lavender extract will contain only volatiles physically extracted from lavender. They are useful for imparting a natural aroma to a product, or for masking cosmetic base odors without the use of fragrance.
They can be combined into blends to become more complex and distinctive.
