cartridge filters (incorporating bag filters and strainers) are filter systems used for the removal of particulate matter or certain minerals from water supplies. unlike sand filters, multimedia sand filters or activated carbon filters, cartridge filters do not generally have a backwashable filter medium, although certain strainers can be cleaned and re-used. This usually means that the operating costs of cartridge filters are higher than those of media filters. cartridge filters do however have certain benefits over media filters, e. G. : cartridge filters can remove smaller particles, with filtration down to below 0,5 microns available on most systems. capital cost of cartridge filters is usually lower than that of media filters. cartridge filters are very economical at lower flow rates. cartridge filters take up less space than conventional media filters.
