Factory Direct Craft Supply was founded by a stay-at-home mother in the 1980's after finding her husband had been laid off from work. Desperate for income, she began to buy place mats in bulk from a company in Louisville, Kentucky; adding ruffles and lace, and then reselling them at the local flea markets.
