Our Sewage Treatment Plants are based on the activated sludge process. The sewage initially enters the primary settlement tank which incorporates lamella parallel plates which aid in reducing the suspended solids by at 70 per cent and the BOD by at 25 per cent. The effluent then enters the aeration chamber wherein removal of BOD, the coagulation of non-settable colloidal solids & stabilization of organic matter are accomplished by using bacteria. Bacteria are used to convert the colloidal & dissolved carbonaceous organic matter into various gases & into cell tissue. Cell tissue has specific gravity slightly higher than the water; which is removed from water by gravity settling. Activated Bacterial Growth is achieved with the help of Cow Dung or Domestic effluent.
The reaction which occurs during the process is as follows: COHNS+O2+Nutrients Bacteria CO2+NH3+C5H7NO2+other end products (Organic Matter)→C5H7NO2+5O2 Bacteria 5CO2+2H2O+NH3+Energy The treated effluent then moves to the settlement area which contains a lamella parallel plate assembly for settling finer particles.
