In 1986, Graham Smith operated a haulage company and was asked by British Telecom to collect a range of equipment from a local telephone exchange and take it to a scrapyard for disposal. While waiting to load the equipment, Graham couldn't help but notice that it seemed to be almost new. His curiosity getting the better of him, he asked why the equipment was being dumped. He was told that it required a modification that they couldn't find anyone to carry out. Therefore, the equipment had to be scrapped.
