ISS Group Services was founded in 1977 as an independent service organisation for electron optical and analytical instrumentation. Continued growth has resulted in ISS being not only one of the largest independent scientific service groups in Europe, but also providing the market with new and reconditioned products. But how did the story begin, David Cunningham founded his company based on many years of experience in electron optics community with companies such as Vickers and AEI . Through his knowledge and the customers he met, he realised that as manufacturers replaced or upgraded systems, it would often leave users unable to obtain parts or even routine service on instruments that had many years of excellent life left in them. ISS was born. Strange though it may seem, manufacturers still continue to replace systems without consideration of upgrade paths or long term support and this has helped ISS grow into one of Europe s largest independent service organisations. They offer every option for the user: from preventative maintenance to contract and breakdown cover for most makes and models of electron microscopes along with ancillary preparation equipment. It is sometimes the little things that make all the difference to a company staying in business. Relocation of a laboratory and all its instrumentation is a challenge requiring specialist skills. ISS have provided removal and relocation services for many companies in the last thirty years. With this excellent reputation for supporting customers, ISS found themselves being approached by manufacturers asking them to sell their products. This new dynamic brought a new structure to ISS with the establishment of a sales team trained to demonstrate and support a range of new systems. Now ISS has a business shared between sales and service never forgetting that these go hand in hand. A sale does not end with the sign off of the acceptance sheet. That is just the beginning. It is the start of a relationship where ISS personnel support and interact with their customers to ensure they get the most out of their purchase. After all, and perhaps more so these days, making a big purchase decision will impact on an individual s success in research and it is therefore the full package of training, applications knowledge and service responsiveness with extended warranties that influences a purchase.
