Marks interest in saddlemaking began in his youth. He and his older brother Matt received their first saddles on loan from their grandparents. Matts was a Hamley, and Marks was a Porter. Both saddles were built in the early 1900s. The first thing the boys did was to take them apart, and then put them back together. Marks brother Matt began his saddle making career twenty some years ago. Matt has become world renowned for building quality ranch saddles for todays working cowboy. He is known for building saddles that reflect the old Hamley Saddlery style and tradition.
