Venture Engineering & Construction was contracted to perform a heat and material balance to capture seasonal fluctuations in process production rates. Dyno Nobel had an existing heat and material balance performed on their ammonium nitrate facility during its original design. After years of operational information gathering it was found that the production rate of the facility was dramatically influenced by ambient temperature. This heat and material balance was performed on the entire facility to reflect production rates observed during winter conditions.
The information gathered during this project allows the client to more accurately predict the production rates of the process under winter conditions. Venture created a process model using ChemCAD, and it highlighted potential bottlenecks of the process. In addition, determining process flows under winter conditions allowed the client to evaluate the process safety equipment to determine if they were properly sized.
