Metal samples collect dirt and grime and also get oxidized over time. The surface of Hot Forged and Hot Rolled samples are normally covered with scales. Saw cut samples could be too rough to be directly analyzed. The real metal needs to be uncovered before it can be analyzed accurately. Normally Ferrous metal samples are softer and are recommended to be turned or milled to reveal the metal surface for analysis on spectrometers. Samples should have at least one surface which is flat and can be prepared to have a smooth flat surface; they should be large enough to completely cover the hole on the Spark Chamber of the Spectrometer (normally around 13 mm dia.); good flatness is important so that Argon Gas does not leak out from the sides; samples should not have micro cracks or scratches, which would lead to poor analytical results; samples should be freshly prepared before analysis.
In many laboratories, Sample Preparation Machines are kept at a distance. On the other hand, the 3 in 1-AFVS is Versatile, Compact & Handy. On it, one can turn softer non-Ferrous samples as well grind hard Ferrous & other samples. The Turning Station has a safety see-through guard for the safety of the Operator from hot flying chips. The AFVS Variant Model of the 3 in 1 has the additional facility of Auto-Feed & Variable Speed for better surface finish. The Grinding Station has auto-grit collection facility. An added advantage is the Pointing Attachment for fine & accurate pointing of Tungsten Sparking Electrodes to just the right, recommended cone angle.
The 3 in 1 provides a low-noise, economical solution to sample preparation just beside or very close to the spectrometer. Laboratories which analyze a high number of Ferrous & non-Ferrous samples daily find it extremely useful. It gives a big advantage to the spectrometer operator as he can decide how much of the surface to remove. The Turning Station has a micrometer screw gauge for adjusting the depth of cut. The 3 in 1 saves cost especially when preparing Standards.
