Microlon was founded in 1964 by Bill Williams Sr., inventor of the Microlon Metal Treatment. At that time Bill Sr. was working as a gunsmith on weapons and was selling modified .17 caliber ammunition used by .223 rifles. He noticed that this bullet, which used a huge charge of powder when fired, created a tremendous amount of extra heat due to friction where it came in contact with the rifling of the barrel.
