Post-oxidation The process of oxidizing nitrided surfaces to significantly improve corrosion resistance has been applied in the automotive industry and other sectors for many years. In the process, free iron and iron nitride are converted to a stable iron oxide spinal so that a chemically resistant protective layer of approx. 1 m thickness is added to the white surface layer. As the oxides fill the porous zone at the surface, the oxide layer is firmly attached to the white layer. Post-oxidation can also be performed subsequently to a glass bead blasting treatment. The incurred reduction in roughness leads to a shiny black surface. An oxide layer applied to a normal surface can be mirror-finished. Post-oxidation can be carried out as an integral part of the nitriding treatment process.
