Nylon (PA 6) is highly shock resistant and is also resistant to abrasion, although less so than extruded PA-66 / Nylon-66 or melted polyamides. The characteristics of the single types of Polyamides are not very different.
Nylon-6 is the best known extruded polyamide and offers a combination of all typical polyamide material properties. Furthermore, because of the manufacturing process, only a limited size range and unit weight can be produced. This restricts the design possibilities of the user.
Compared to the cast varieties however, this variety displays higher water absorption, is less wear resistant and has less dimensional stability. When dry, immediately following thermoplastic processing, they are hard and fragile to a greater or lesser degree. Following the absorption of atmospheric moisture or conditioning in water, they become stronger and more resistant to abrasion. The absorption of water is associated with an increase in volume and consequently also an increase in dimensions. This factor must be taken into consideration during the construction of mechanical parts.
Extruded Nylon has excellent sliding and wear properties and is chemically resistant. Polyamides are resistant to solvents, oils, fats, fuels and weak alkaline solutions. They are not resistant to strong concentrations of alkalis or acids. Density of Polyamides / Nylons is heavier than water, thus it sinks. It possesses high modules of elasticity, so slightly soft gears, rings and spacers are drawn in these materials. Non-modified Polyamides continue to burn even following removal of the flame.
