Pumping water from surface water sources such as dams, ponds, lakes, and lagoons frequently turns out to be more complicated than initially presumed.
The pump needs to be protected from weather but a pump shelter near the shore often leaves the pump's inlet in shallow water - resulting in clogged up inlet filters and pump downtime, or worse, damage. Rainbow Power Company suggest a "floating surface pump" for these situations.
Grundfos MTRFlex – Semi-submersible
The Grundfos MTRFlex Surface Pump is a semi-submersible transfer pump that can be solar powered (DC power supply) or mains powered (240V AC power). The bottom half of the pump is immersed in water while the other half (the motor) stays above the surface. Grundfos has specifically designed pontoons to house the MTRFlex pump systems and protect it from weather and water alike.
Ideally, the MTRFlex surface pump is placed where the water source is deep – usually in the centre of the dam/lake by means of the floating pontoon. You won't have to visit your pump often - with variable speed operation and motor protection built in as standard they require virtually no maintenance.
