Area of production:
the strawberries marketed by frutaria are grown on irrigated land in an area known as almonte-marismas. The land is located in the municipality of almonte (huelva province), close to the village of rocio, which lies between the town of almonte and the coast. The soil in the area is light and the climate mild.
as with other fruits, the flavour and smell of our strawberries is not determined by the area where they are grown. These factors are influenced, rather, by the variety, the time of year and how ripe the fruit is when it is harvested.
we begin marketing the strawberries in small amounts at the end of december and the beginning of january. Larger amounts are sold every day as the harvesting season progresses until it comes to a close in may.
we grow a californian variety called camarosa and one of the aims of its breeders was to grow larger fruit. The majority of the strawberries weigh between 25 and 40 grams although it is not unusual to come across fruits weighing up to 60 grams.
in the main, our strawberries are marketed in two packaging formats: crates or smaller containers or tubs.
for bulk packaging we use 2 kg cardboard boxes with a 25 x 30 cm base.
we also use 9 cm high boxes with a 60 x 40 base containing sixteen 250-gram tubs, ten 500-gram tubs or six 1,000-gram tubs. Our 12 cm-high boxes can hold twelve 430 gram or 480 gram tubs. All tubs are plastic (polypropylene or pet) and can be covered with lids made of the same material or with plastic thermosealing film (either pvc or polypropylene).
