Granite flooring has become increasingly popular in recent decade and besides its beauty, granite has several obvious benefits to homeowners. Apart from flooring granite is also used as countertops and backsplashes. Granite can give your home an aura of richness. Its beauty can surpass most other flooring material. Due to this granite is quite expensive and quite heavy, so it must be installed by professional only.
Being a natural stone product it is completely biodegradable which makes it common and favorite among environment friendly homeowners. It is not so porous as marble and need not to be sealed if using in moisture proof area. It is much harder and stain resistant than any other material such as marble. Many home owners are taking away granite to their homes noting its resistance to stains, durability and hardness.

  • Things which are needed while installing are: granite floor tiles, plastic spacers, wet saw, backerboard, backerboard screws, thinset, notched trowel, rubber mallet, grout float, grout sponge, penetrating grout sealer, paper towel.
  • Make sure your sub-floor is dry and clean. Remove peeling paint and residual sealant by sanding or scrapping the floor and patch any imperfections with water proof compound.
  • Start in a 90 degree corner and lay your floor tiles and you can use plastic spacer to keep the granite tiles properly aligned. Trim the tiles with a wet saw, so that they can fit.
  • Now mix the thinset according to the instructions on the pack, and use a trowel to spread an even layer of thinset on the sub-floor. Place the backerboard and screw it down so as to make a smooth surface which may protect your granite from damaging.
  • Just hold the trowel at 45 degree angle to form consistent ridges and spreadthinset. Use a slight twisting motion to press the granite tile into the mortar and tap it down with a rubber mallet to force out any air pockets and ensure complete contact.
  • Leave and allow the mortar dry for 24 hours and stay off the tiles.
  • Mix grout in small batches that can be used within 20 minutes. The consistency of grout should be like toothpaste and let it stand for 5 minutes before using. Work the grout into the tile joints with a grout float and clean off any excess with the help of edge of the float and using damp sponge.
  • Now leave the grout for three days before applying a penetrating grout sealant. After applying the sealant remove the excess sealant from the tile immediately.
