The statistical data says sugar consumption has decreased in decades due to the people turning into calorie conscious. It is true that sugar causes various things to happen in the body including a lethal disease named diabetes; yet Indian community use it for number of preparations as per culture. Here are the nutritional and other additional facts about these artificial sweeteners:

  • Aspartame is 180 times sweeter than sugar and approved by FDA. It is used in many drinks and may lead to side effects.
  • Saccharin is 300 times sweeter than sugar but after a survey the fact came into light is that saccharin is not healthy and even complains of cancer had come.
  • Sucralose is said to be 600 times sweeter than sugar, introduced in late 90’s but the safe uses are still a mystery.
Some of the natural sweeteners are honey and stevia as being said the safest sweeteners to be used. Honey is safe for all age group people and one third sweeter than sugar but naturally obtained with no such side effects.
Stevia (stevia rebaudiana) is natural herb which is 300 times sweeter than sugar with no calories and said to be beneficial for diabetics. Unlike others it doesn’t lead to weight gain and high blood pressure.
But the question arises that the use of artificial sweeteners is always safe for health in long run? The researches and surveys have proved that these artificial sweeteners have created havoc by affecting people with fatal ailments in various countries. Artificial sweeteners are low in calorie but the way they affect if their use remains for years can cost lives. It has been seen that these sweeteners if used for years may cause high blood pressure, diabetes and cancer.
While the use of natural sweeteners like honey and stevia is almost safe in long run for all kind of diseases. Stevia is natural herb which is been tested for its naturalness and safety on diabetic patients and the results are positive carrying no harmful effects.
So it is recommended to take sugar in low quantity rather than entirely suspending from your diet as the low level in blood sugar may cause various disorders. Natural sweeteners are good for health which also doesn’t cause weight gain and other crippling ailments in the body.
