Scotland is the natural place from which to source your organic seed potatoes. The warmer climate of the leading potato growing ares of the UK and Europe allow the rapid spread of viral diseases in the potato crop. These diseases are spread by aphids. The cooler summer temperatures do not encourage the multiplication of aphids and hence it is possible to grow potatoes in many areas of Scotland for a number generations without the build up of viral diseases. In addition many of our seed crops are grown at altitudes up to 200m above sea level - again cooler are less prone to aphid spread disease. We grow our seed potatoes in rotations of no less than 7 years with often 10 or 12 year between potato crops. This helps us to minimise the diseases that are spread in the soil. The use of aphicides allow non-organic seed to be grown in many areas, however Scotland is the natural place to grow quality organic seed potatoes.
