EMU consists of four motor cars and four trailer cars. The EMU adopts electric AC drive mode. The EMU is equipped with two driving units, and each of them is in charge of the driving of two motor cars and two trailer cars. The EMU has fine aerodynamics profile with both ends as streamlined contour. Driver’s cabs are arranged at both ends of the EMU. During normal operation, the front cab will control the operation of the EMU. Two EMUs can be coupled together for normal operation (only one driver is required), and can be decoupled automatically.The configuration of the EMU is one first-class seating coach, six second-class seating coaches, and one second-class coach for both seating and dining. The seats arrangement for the first-class is 2＋2; and that for the second-class is 2＋3. The seats are of rotating type. However, for the second-class coach for both seating and dining, the seats are of fixed type. The seating capacity of each EMU is 557 persons.
Main technical characteristics:
Based on the prototype ICE/ Velaro E, and taking the actual situation of Chinese railways into account, we have developed and manufactured the Model CRH3 EMU.Its carbody is of the structure welded with large-sized extruded hollow aluminum section. The driver’s cab is of the structure welded with bended aluminum section as frame and sheet aluminum section as covering. The strength of the carbody is calculated in accordance with EN12663.Fire safety is in accordance with DIN5510 and EN45545. After fire occurring, the EMU can still run for 10 minutes under the speed of 80km/h. So for this purpose, special design and protection shall be considered for carbody, electric apparatus cabinet, wires and cables, gangway door, and materials selection.Its bogies are of SF500 type with fine function and have been proved by test and trial running. In order to widen the carbody and increase the speed of the EMU, we have innovated the body bolster, vibration damper, spring parameters, transmission ratio etc on the basis of the original SF500 bogie.The traction system of the EMU is similar with that of the Velaro E. Traction power is 8800kw. Traction devices are distributed at the eight coaches. The main transformer is of single-phase one with capacity of 5.6MVA. The difference of this transformer with that of the Velaro E is that its auxiliary windings are eliminated. The main transformer adopts forced oil circulation air cooling. In case the blower of the cooling system is in failure, the available traction power of the EMU will be reduced by 25% only. The traction converter is of the compact structure, modular design for easy access to operation and maintenance. The elements of semiconductor for phase modular are IGBT.The auxiliary power supply system adopts the mode of power supplied by train line. Power source devices distributed in various coaches will supply power to the main lines. The power of on-board power source devices is supplied by DC of the traction converter. The auxiliary converter will convert the DC into three-phase AC for on-board power source system.The on-board network control system is in charge of information transmission function. The system consists of two steps of information transmission, namely MVB (multifunction vehicle bus) and WTB (wired train bus). The communication agreement basically conforms to the standards VIC556 and IEC61375-1：1999.
