Unlike "leafing" aluminum pigments, which align themselves at the surface of the drying film, "non-leafing" pigments orient themselves randomly throughout the film. This configuration is produced because the individual particles contain a coating of oleic acid that allows the pigment this random orientation, rather than a fatty acid that supports the physics of leafing. The advantage to this arrangement of the pigment particles is to allow its use in coating systems in conjunction with other colored pigments, yielding very different and dramatic appearances.
